Special School

Enhancing life through learning

A Warm Welcome

JFK Special School is a founding member of the Learning in Harmony Multi-Academy Trust along with Sheringham Primary School. The school offers specialist provision for pupils with special and additional needs-based across four sites in Newham. Our capacity now is for 139 students in total. Pupils are admitted from Reception to Year 14.

The Stratford site offers specialist provision for up to 50 students with sensory and medical needs. This site is equipped with sensory and soft play rooms, as well as large classrooms equipped with tracking hoists and outdoor equipment for students who are more independently mobile.

The Beckton site offers specialist teaching and learning for up to 59 students with autism and communication needs. This site has developed its outdoors space and use of local facilities to support independence and life skills and offers a structured teaching and learning approach.

The North Woolwich caters for up to 18 younger students with autism and communication needs. The site offers large classrooms, specialist therapy rooms and equipped outside space.

The newly opened Plaistow site offers specialist learning for up to 25 students with autism and communication needs for Secondary - Post 16. The site offers large classrooms, a therapy room and a common room where students can eat lunch and socialise.

Consultation on JFK Special School’s Significant Change application

JFK Special School is currently the only specialist provider in Newham for young autistic people. As such we are seeking DfE approval to reconfigure our current Beckton site and extend our provision for young people aged 11-19 from 60 to 80 places in the next year. Our proposal may also enable the offering for additional specialist places for Key Stage 2 learners.

The proposal aims to:

  • Remodel the existing entrance and large hall to a more appropriate space for physical activities, smaller dining areas and movement breaks. The current hall space is not efficient for effective transition and creates problems for some students moving  from the bus to the classrooms.

Originally built for pupils with physical impairments, our site in Beckton is not purpose built for our pupils with complex ASC needs. Reconfiguring our site will enable us to offer improved ‘built in’ ASC resources as well as expand our current ASC pupil capacity. This proposal will allow us to extend our outreach to the local community in Newham by enabling more young people to access our outstanding specialist provision.

We value the views and opinions of all stakeholders. For this reason, we would be grateful if you could complete this survey:
