The Reception Office Staff travelled to other schools within the Trust for Front of House Training.  They all found this very useful in different ways. The more senior staff found it helpful to affirm that there were doing things well and the new staff learned how important their role is in presenting the 'face of JFK Special School' to the world.

Millie said "I would recommend the course as it help me learn how to prioritise and deal with different people"

Optimus Financial Efficiency Workshops

The SBM went to a series of workshops about Financial efficiency in the education sector hosted by Optimus Education.  These were very useful as it encouraged bench-marking of processes with other similar school settings and not just those within the Trust.

Rebound Therapy 'Train the Trainers' programme

"Hi Harriet, Josephine and Sandra,

Congratulations on completing ‘Train the Trainers’!

Our team have gone through the updates you each provided for the Distance Learning Module work, and can confirm that all aspects have now been signed off as complete.

Paul said that your presentations yesterday at Valence School were outstanding.

Paul will generate your Rebound Therapy Level 1 (in-house) Tutor certification this afternoon.

Your certificates will be sent via first class post to Diane Rochford, we will ask her to countersign and present them to you.

Very well done, and good luck with running your first Level 1 Rebound Therapy training course at JFK Special School, whenever that may be.

Keep in touch.

Kind regards,"

Social Stories

Halima attended a one-day course to learn about the importance of social stories and how to write an effective one.  Social stories are deigned to change student's views on a particular concept rather than change a student's behaviour.  It is essential to gather relevant information before writing a social story as the information will effect the content of the story.  There are guidelines that need to be adhered to in order to write a social story that will have the greatest impact on the student.

We run a printmaking twilight training session at JFK Beckton. We have had a semi-professional printing press in Beckton for some time now. The learners enjoy printing as it is a close-ended process with clear steps and final product, artwork they can display in school or take home with them. Printmaking not only supports the development of our pupils' creative selves, it is a great vehicle to learn communication or maths, as well as to work as part of a team

Discrete Trial Teaching Training

Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT) is an intervention method based on the science of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). It is a highly structured method of teaching skills by breaking them down into smaller, teachable components.

Task analysis training: This is a set of written steps that contain all the components necessary to complete the task. The steps can be taught through the use of forward or backward chaining.

A few classes in Beckton have started trialling these approaches in their classes and more will embed these strategies in Term 2. The training was received positively by staff.

Prompting Training

A member of the Senior Management Team led a training session on prompting. As a school a core vision relates to promoting independence and the aims of this course was to discuss the prompting hierarchy and the importance of fading prompts over time to promote independence. This impact of this training is evident in lesson observations, with students being provided with the opportunities to be independent, reflected in pupil progress data.

Halima attended a half day course on Numicon to gain a better understanding on how to effectively use the resources to introduce counting and the four operations to her students.  The course developed her confidence in using Numicon to teach students how to count as well as quantify numbers.  In addition to this, she is now able to teach subtraction and the times tables effectively.

Use of Apprenticeship Levy

The Learning in Harmony Trust is required to pay the Apprenticeship Levy.  Here at JFK we have used part of our contributions to fund Apprenticeships for both new roles and for existing staff to progress.

We currently have 5 Teaching Assistants on an Apprenticeship and some Teachers on the Apprentice Masters Programme.  We are lucky enough to have several admin apprentices with us and 3 who have just finished their courses have been given staff contracts.  One of our office managers is also starting a School Business Manager Apprentice Course.

Wellbeing Conference

A number of Senior Staff attended a range of seminars that focused around promoting wellbeing across large organisations. looking at promoting staff resilience, motivation and productivity. Key information from this conference helped develop an action plan, aiming to increase staff wellbeing, evident through mood KPI on Celpax.

Arts Award

The most recent Arts Award training with SEN FOCUS has enabled Christos to become a Bronze & Silver Arts Award Adviser, hence being able to facilitate the delivery of Bronze and Silver Arts Award activities in our setting. He can now organise projects for the students working towards Bronze and Silver awards which are equivalent to Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications. Our school is registered as an Arts Award Centre in Newham and can provide our young learners with essential creative skills and employability skills to pursue future professional development in Arts organisations and centres. Through last year's Arts Award project, we already have two former JFK students who have been contacted by ActionSpace in order to work at their studio.

Complex Needs and Participation

Gemma attended CPD training on Complex Needs and Participation.  Here are the objectives of the course:

  • enable practitioner to extend their understanding of autism in relation to pupils with complex needs.
  • provide practical strategies to support practitioners as they develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of effective autism practice
  • enable practitioners to reflect on and evaluate their own practice in relation to EHC planning for a pupil with complex needs

Vision and Values

Training on whole school Vision and Values was delivered to all staff on the first day back. Staff explored in depth what the vision of the school is and how this translates into everyday practice. Staff further explored the values of the school and how these core principles support the development of the school.

'Play' delivered by Kirstyn, S&LT and Tara, OT Beckton and JFK Middle Leaders

Play is as aspect of the primary curriculum that supports and builds on the interests of the students through exciting and meaningful learning experiences.  Play is essential to pupil development as it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being of the students.
